Who would have thought that such an unlikely combination could be so powerful? I’m sure you have all learned about the benefits of pineapple; the fact that it contains a very powerful enzyme called bromelain. This has well documented anti-inflammatory properties. It fights inflammation by interfering with several chemical messengers that are directly involved in the production of series 2 prostaglandins ( the chemicals that cause inflammation). Bromelain also helps to control the role that the immune system plays in inflammatory damage. It seems to influence the number of aggressive white blood cells that migrate to the affected areas. Bromelain is found in high concentrations in the slightly tougher inner core of the pineapple, so be careful not to discard that part of the pineapple.
Now, let’s take a look at Celery. A rather benign, insignificant food one might think. It is seemingly innocuous. Most of us would not credit celery with much at all in the way of medicinal benefits. However, celery is a powerhouse of complex chemicals. It contains a compound called… 3-n-butylphthalide or 3nB for short. This substance is a terrific anti inflammatory and a pain killer! Yep you heard me, a pain killer. Ok so it’s not going to compete with pharmaceutical grade pain killers but it does have the ability when added to your daily food regimen to give you cumulative benefits! This is great news for those of us that don’t want to always have to run for the ibuprofen bottle. Celery also contains a wonderful group of chemicals called coumarins. These are the same chemicals that fill the air when a lawn has just been mowed. Celery coumarins are known to help remove metabolic waste products that accumulate in the joints. Big news for those of you who suffer with joint pain… Once removed these byproducts are sent to the lymphatic system where they are sent to the kidneys for removal through the urine. The body is such an amazing thing!
Finally, let’s say a word about Ginger. Ginger is, without a doubt the king of all anti-inflammatory ingredients. It contains a powerful group of chemicals that give it its zingy flavor and aroma – specifically zingerone and shogaol. These are both anti-inflammatory agents and work in a way that is similar to the group of pharmaceutical drugs known as COX-2 inhibitors. These drugs work, again, by interfering with the production of pro-inflammatory prostaglandins. Ginger is also a strong circulatory stimulant, so it can be of great value in easing discomfort in cold, stiff joints. Heads up for all you winter joint sufferers.
